Tips for saving money on utilities

Making your home comfortable all year with the perfect temperatures can be costly considering the average person spends 6% to 12% of their annual income on their utilities. Taking the time to make inexpensive changes to your home will reduce the money you spend on the utilities. Here are several ways you can do just that.

Change your light bulbs to a fluorescent bulb. The bulbs save on energy. The do cost more but they last around ten times longer resulting in savings on the utility bill and the costs of replacing the bulbs.

Either all the newest appliances have a clock or a charger attached to them. The charges use energy raising the utility bills. Unplug the appliances you do not use all the time. If you do not want to unplug the appliance, purchase a Smart Power Strip that reduces the energy the appliances use.

Add insulation to your water heater so it retains the heat in the appliance. This provides a large savings on the utility bills by avoiding the high cost of keeping the water hot.

Have your furnace services to make sure it is functioning properly and not wasting energy. Furnaces need to be serviced every two years, which many people fail to do or do not realize the importance of the routine maintenance.

Turn down the temperature of water heater. You do not have to have the setting on the highest level to have hot water. Most water heaters provide adequate hot water at the medium setting.

Buy an energy saving thermostat to control the temperature in the home. Set the thermostat to reduce the heat provided when you are not home and during the night when you are asleep.

Start washing clothes in cold water. Cloths will be cleaned with the cooler temperature setting and you will save money on the utilities. Set the dryer to the moisture setting instead of the timer setting. This also saves money when used.

Change the weather strip on the doors that may be cracked or split. This allows the heated and cooled air to seep outside raising the utility bills and wasting money.

Use timers or sensors on your outside lights. The new lights save on energy providing a savings on the costs of utilities.

Save money on your water bill with a low-flow showerhead. The showerhead will still provide the needed water pressure and amounts of water but it will reduce the amounts of wasted water.

Fix the leaky faucets and toilets. Replace the leaky items and save money on the utility bill as well as being part of the water conservation methods many people are joining.

Only use the washer and dishwasher when you have a full load. Running the appliances with partial loads wastes money and water.

Changing the methods you currently use will save you money on your utilities. Small simple changes will save you money annually.
